Project 1, Task 3: Contextual Awareness

The Beatles had a huge effect on pop culture and the world. The band from Liverpool consisted of 4 primary members consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The band formed in the 60’s.

Every member of the band sang at one point however Lennon was mainly known for Vocals, Guitar and occasionally the Harmonic. McCartney was also mainly vocals and Bass. Harrison was known for Guitar and also got a lot of attention as he played the Sitar which was unusual in British music and Ringo was the drummer. As time progressed and equipment changed, so did the gear of The Beatles. Lennon and Harrison both used the Gibson J-160E frequently. As far as keyboards and pianos go they have used over 16 in their time playing varying from uprights to grand pianos. Ringo primarily used Ludwig kits with either Paiste or Zildjian cymbals. McCartney had a custom bass ordered whilst the band was in Hamburg. It was a left-handed Höfner model 500/1 "violin" bass.

The Beatles became popular around the time where parents could afford to give their children money periodically meaning that they can save up and purchase vinyls and tapes at the time. This was fortunate for The Beatles as it was safe to say, despite them being widely popular with a lot of people, their primary fan base was teenage girls. A lot of their music was also written to make statements to the politics and even the world. The first live song debuted on international TV was performed by The Beatles titled ‘All you need is love’ which was a song about the world coming together and loving one and other. They have many other songs which state many problems. The members of the band, especially John, were very big on peace and wanted their music to be served as a peaceful statement.

The Beatles sang songs about different wars. To name one, Revolution was Lennon's response to the Vietnam War, however, the songs Yesterday and All you need is love are all about war. All of these songs shed a different or larger light on these issues to the listeners as it brought the suffering into the public view. It paints a picture of what war can do to people and how it can change lives.

You would be correct in assuming The Beatles generated a lot of money but they only received a penny for album sold which was around $4. The Beatle's most expensive album to make was Sgt. Pepper coming in at £40,000. This is a huge leap from their first album Please Please me which took a day to record and cost £400. Sgt. Pepper used a variety of recording techniques in various locations whereas Please Please me was just one or two takes as they had rehearsed the song so much.

The Beatle's inspired many new fashion trends such as the Mop Top which was named due to the fact that it looked similar to a wet mop. Another fashion inspired trend was collarless suits which were popular with the mod youth of 1960. A huge fashion impact they have had which has stood the test of time is Beatle boots which are Cuban heeled Chelsea boots. As the band progressed and changed so did their fashion. As they entered their psychedelic phase they dressed more flamboyantly with velvet jackets, bright scarves and acid colours.
